Bodean’s BBQ

It’s hard to believe that I’ve never written a post about Bodean’s. I’ve been going to their restaurants for years! As of this occasion, I’ve visited 5 out of the 8 Bodean’s BBQ restaurants in London. There’s only 1 more for me to go to without having to travel too far: the Covent Garden location.
This visit came about because I was going to see my friends screening of her music documentary, Bunch of Kunst, at Rough Trade East. This is just off Brick Lane at the Brick Lane Market. One of the easier ways for me to get there from work is via Old Street and Bodean’s is right near by on City Road.

Bodean's - Old Street

I’d had an email earlier in the day about a deal: a whole rack of ribs, chips and coleslaw for £10! I couldn’t resist. Especially as their own beer, Boss Hog Brew, was £3.50 a pint and they were showing the opening game of the FIFA World Cup.
Getting to the restaurant at 4:45pm I was there just in time to make the most of the deal; it only runs between 12-5pm on weekdays. I got a seat right at the bar as I was there on my own and had a great view of the TV.

After a little discussion with the staff (they weren’t aware of the deal as it had literally started that day) I got my order in for ribs and I had a pint in front of me. The restaurant was quite quiet with only a handful of others around the bar so it was quite nice and relaxed. I wasn’t sure how long I should have been waiting for my food but after 25 minutes one of the staff noticed I hadn’t got my food yet so went and fetched it. He also gave me a free beer to say sorry. Win!

Bodean's - Ribs, chips and coleslaw

The food arrived and it was piping hot. My mouth started watering straight away. A whole rack of ribs, beautifully smoked with a light coating of barbeque sauce – it was delicious. The meat was perfectly cooked; soft and just holding onto the bone but coming clean away with a light bite. The chips were hot, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The coleslaw was nice and fresh, cutting through the slightly fatty pork.

Bodean's - done

I’ve only ever had 1 disappointing visit to a Bodean’s restaurant and I’ve been visiting for probably 7-8 years now. If you’re in London and looking for somewhere unfussy to eat then you can’t go wrong with Bodean’s. If you don’t believe me, you ask all my friends I’ve introduced to it over the years!
